Judson Larrabee Hand family papers and business records, [ca. 1872-1989].

The collection consists of personal papers and business records of Judson L. Hand and the Hand family of Pelham, Mitchell County, Georgia from ca. 1872-1989. The business records contain information on the various business interests of the Hand family, particularly the Hand Trading Company, including their activities with the fertilizer, livestock, lumber, phosphate, textile, and tobacco industries, as well as naval stores and railroads. Fred Hand's political papers document his activities in the Georgia House of Representatives, particularly his involvement in education and with school integration. The collection also contains photographs (ca. 1890-1989) and genealogical records (1968-1975). The photographs mainly depict views of the Hand family businesses, but also include images of Pelham (Ga.) and photographs relating to Fred Hand's political career. The genealogical records were collected by Fred Hand and include correspondence, photocopies of estate and military records relating to Hand's ancestors.

Judson Larrabee Hand (1850-1916), businessman and politician, married Emma Collingsworth in 1877. After Emma's death in 1898, Hand married Florence Hollis. Hand established a sawmill and turpentine distillery near Pelham (Ga.) as well as a commissary to serve his employees.
